38 Week Appointment

Today was my last day of work!  I'm so fortunate to work in an office that's closed between Christmas and New Years, so if all goes as planned, today was my last day of work until my maternity leave ends in March!  Hooray!  Although who knows when this baby will make his appearance - I fully intend to be at the office working on January 3rd when we reopen if he's not here yet, simply because I want to have as many days at home with him as possible.

Today was our 38 week appointment which was with our 'regular' doctor.  Which was nice because we haven't seen her for several weeks.  The appointment was pretty uneventful.  My blood pressure and weight were both still good.  Although today a new Medical Assistant took me back to the room.  After she took my blood pressure, she said what it was and then asked if that seemed like what my BP normally was.  Well, actually I have no idea.  J was with me and said well, that's a normal BP and her's is always normal.  A few minutes later a Medical Assistant who is always there came in and said she just wanted to double check my BP because it was so much higher than I normally run.  When she rechecked it, it was way different than the first girl.  Geez - hopefully they get that worked out because that could really mess some people up!

Last night I started having ankle swelling.  I'm honestly surprised I was able to avoid it this long.  My doctor said it's totally normal and with a normal BP there's nothing to worry about.  I also had another cervical check (this one was not as comfortable as the last one....) and am about 50% effaced and 1 cm dilated.  She also talked about when we would schedule an induction if needed.  Basically after your due date they like to schedule you for an induction the next day your doctor is on call (which would be Jan. 5th).  They do not let you go past 41 weeks because they find it makes for added stress on the baby and mother which I'm fine with.  I'm still really hoping that we'll go into labor naturally in the next 2 weeks though.

We also discussed the fact that I have a flat pelvis, which is something I didn't know.  She thought she had mentioned it to me earlier, but I didn't remember hearing about it.  Basically my pelvis is nice and wide, but not as deep or rounded as normal.  This can be a problem when delivering a large baby.  Luckily she estimated the size of this baby at 6 pounds, so we're good in that area.  She also said it's not so flat that she's concerned but we should be prepared that I could need a c-section if I don't dilate all the way.  She said nothing to worry about yet, but I appreciated that she mentioned it so that I can mentally prepare myself, just in case.  So, all in all, I think we are still right on track!
